How will TENS help the pain?
TENS stands for Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation. The treatment consists of passing mild electrical impulses across the skin, into the nerver fibres which lie below, via electrodes pads. TENS impulses help your body produce its own pain killing chemicals, such as endorphins, encephalins etc.
The level of pain relief obtained varies from person to person. Some find that the TENS provides all the pain relief required during the whole labour, whilst others find it relieves pain during the first stage but other analgesics are also needed during the second and third stage.

How do I arrange for a TENS machine?
Most hospitals do not provide a TENS machine. You will need to confirm this with either your midwife or the hospital directly well in advance.

How do I know that the TENS machine I will receive will be reliable?
We have teamed up with Body Clocks who are the leading supplier of TENS machines to all major hospitals across the UK (both NHS and privately owned). They also supply the National Childbirth Trust (NCT). Their company is greatly respected and we would only make something available to you only when we are convinced about it's suitability and reliability for you.
How will I know how to operate the machine?
All machines on hire come complete with a small and simple manual. The unit is ready-to-use with leads and batteries. We always add an additional battery and lead just in case you have a long labour and need a replacement. We strongly recommend that you test the machine on receiving it just to make sure that you are happy and comfortable with the operation.
Can I combine FemmeTENS with other medication?
Yes - It can be used with analgesics such as gas and air or pethidine.
When should the Femme TENS not be used?
1. TENS should not be used before 37 weeks of pregnancy unless under medical supervision
2. Electrodes should only be placed as recommended, unless otherwise stated by your doctor, midwife or physiotherapist
3. Do not place electrodes on the front or side of the neck, abdomen or places on the head which cause current to flow transcerebrally (through the head).
4. Do not use TENS if you have a demand type cardiac pacemaker, suffer from epilepsy, or whenever pain syndromes are undiagnosed.
WARNING:
1. Electronic monitoring equipment (such as ECG monitors and ECG alarms) may not operate properly when TENS stimulation is in use.
2. Skin irritation can occur following long term application.
My due date is a long time away. When is the best time to book my TENS machine?
If you are planning to use TENS for pain relief during labour, we would recommend that you book your machine with us at least a month before your due date.
When will I receive the machine?
The normal arrival time of your machine is 2 weeks before your expected due date. I am due in a week. Can I still hire?

What happens if my baby arrives late?
If you wish to extend the hire further, you will be charged £5 per additional week. If you have paid by credit card, this will be charged automatically.
How do I return the TENS machine?
We would strongly recommend that you return the machine by Royal Mail Special Delivery as this insures the contents and would safeguard you against any damage to unit during transit.
What if I cannot return the machine in time?
If you are unable to return the machine to us on the agreed date, £5 per week will be charged to your credit card for every additional week till we receive the machine or the cost of the machine (£59.95) recovered, whichever is earlier). If you damage or lose the machine, you will be liable to pay for the cost of the machine in full.
